Webinar topic
AI and ethics in the legal profession

Webinar description

AI is becoming more and more established in legal practice, where it offers opportunities and risks. How can you use this cutting-edge technology wisely, guided by ethics and in a way that enhances your services?

Many of the issues are more subtle than the horror stories about non-existent authorities dreamt up by AI ‘hallucination’. What are your obligations if you rely on AI-generated outputs? What can AI do well, and what shouldn’t you trust it with? How much checking do you have to do? Can using AI affect confidentiality and your ability to claim legal privilege? Are there cyber-security risks? Do you need to disclose that you’ve used AI? Which AI is right for which job? And perhaps most importantly, will AI overtake junior and even senior lawyers, or do human professionals still offer something important and unique?

Watch this webinar to learn from Jennie Pakula, whose firm offers expert regulatory compliance advice for lawyers. Jennie offers an ethical framework to guide AI use based on understanding the fundamental role and obligations of a lawyer. She applies this framework to give practical guidance in using AI, discussing a range of relevant legal tools.

By watching this webinar, you will:

  • Understand relevant ethical obligations in the Rules of Conduct and Client Care;
  • Reflect on the lawyer’s role and what this means for using AI;
  • Learn about available AI tools and their strengths and weaknesses;
  • Get tips on how to use those tools skilfully.

Guest Speaker

Jennie Pakula
Director & Principal Lawyer at The Lawyer's Friend

Jennie Pakula has three decades of experience working for legal regulators in Victoria and New South Wales, where her work ranged from ethics, complaint handling, investigations, prosecutions, auditing, and policy development. At the Victorian Legal Services Board and Commissioner, she managed the front end of the complaints section (and read and triaged 14-15,000 client complaints) and as Manager, Innovation & Consumer Engagement, she worked with many lawyers and others to identify barriers to innovation and compliance concerns in new services. She developed and provided guidance on legal services pricing, lawyers providing holistic (legal and non-legal) services, digitising records, developing digital self-help tools, use of generative AI, and many other aspects of modern practice.

In 2024 Jennie established The Lawyer’s Friend, a law practice offering expert regulatory compliance advice for lawyers. She draws on her extensive experience to help lawyers and firms to refine their practice and better serve their clients. Among other things, she helps them to use technology, including generative AI, ethically and effectively, and to price tech-leveraged legal services.

Jennie has an LLB from the University of New South Wales and worked as a solicitor before becoming a regulator.
